Uso do Passado Contínuo e Simples — Inglês Avançado

We often use [Nós frequentemente usamos] the past simple [o passado simples] to talk about a completed past event [para falar de eventos completados no passado] and the past continuous [e o passado contínuo] to describe the situation [para descrever a situação] that existed at the time [que existiu nesse tempo]. The completed event [O evento completado] might have interrupted [pode ter interrompido] the situation [a situação], or just occurred [ou acabado de ocorrer] while the situation or event [quanto a situação ou evento] was in progress [estava em progresso].

We don't normally use [Nós normalmente não usamos] the past continuous [o passado contínuo] with certain verbs [com certos vebos] describing states [que descrevem estados]:

• This house belonged to the King of Sweden, (NOT ...was belonging to...)
