Hoje vamos aprender o phrasal verb SORT OUT. Para os que já conhecem esse phrasal verb, essa postagem serve não apenas para relembrá-lo, mas a vê-lo no seu uso literário.

Como mencionado em outras postagens, esse phrasal verb vem de um trecho do livro New Moon:

I tried to sort out the chaos in my head so that I could answer. “You know you saw him in the meadow. You were there...” The words came out in a wondering tone as it all sunk in. “You were there, and you kept him from killing me...” (New Moon, chapter XIII pg. 309 )

O Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs de Chambers comenta sobre seu significado:

1. People often use sort out to refer to action of any kind that solves a problem, corrects a fault, or makes the situation satisfactory again. 2. You also sort things out when you separate them into different types or groups, or when you identify one type and separate them from the rest. 3. You sort out people who are acting in a confused or disorganized way when you show or tell them what to do. 4. You sort someone out when you punish them or do something to prevent them doing wrong again.

O Dicionário de Phrasal Verbs de Michaelis trás 5 definições, e as que se encaixam no contexto literário estão abaixo:

2. Pôr em ordem, arrumar. 4. Resolver problemas pessoais, por a cabeça em ordem.

Assim, na nossa contextualização acima, Bella diz: “I tried to sort out the chaos in my head so that I could answer.” [Eu tentei organizar o caos em minha cabeça para que eu pudesse responder.] O sentido é que Bella ficou atordoada pelo que ouviu e assim ela precisava reorganizar as coisas em sua cabeça para responder à Jacob.
