Whether / If
Both whether and if are used to introduce a yes/no question: [Tanto whether e if são usados para introduzir um sim/não numa questão:]
Examples:
He asked me whether I felt well. [Ele me perguntou se me sentia bem]
We're not sure if they have decided. [Não temos certeza se eles decidiram]
The verb discuss generally takes whether rather than if. [O verbo discuss geralmente usa whether do que if.]
Examples:
We discussed whether he should be hired. [Nós discutimos sobre se ele deveria ser demitido]
They discussed whether to invest in the new idea. [Eles discutiram sobre se investir é uma nova ideia]
After Prepositions [Depois de preposições]
Use only whether after prepositions: [Use apenas whether depois de preposições]
Examples:
We talked about whether we should go or not. [Nós conversamos sobre se devíamos ir ou não]
I looked into whether he should stay. [Ele considerou se devia ficar]
Infinitives [Infinitivos]
Use only whether before infinitives: [Use apenas whether antes de infinitivos]
Examples:
She can't decide whether to buy the house or wait. [Ela não consegue decidir se compra a casa ou espera]
He considered whether to give up the position or quit next year. [Ele considerou se desistia da posição ou para próximo ano]
Formal / Informal
Generally, whether is considered more formal than if. [Normalmente, whether é considerado mais formal do que if]
Examples:
Let me know whether you will be able to attend the conference. [Me avise se você poderá assistir a conferência]
The CEO will decide whether this is a risk worth taking. [CEO decidirá se valerá correr esse risco]
