Transitive Verbs [Verbos Transitivos]
Transitive verbs take direct objects. The vast majority of verbs in English are transitive. [Verbos transitivos tomam objetos direto. A vasta maioria dos verbos em inglês são transitivos.]
Examples:
I took my books to class. [Eu levei meus livros para a aula]
We played chess last night. [Nós jogamos xadrez noite passada]
Notice that transitive verbs always take objects. You will always be able to ask a question beginning with 'What' or 'Whom'. [Note que verbos transitivos sempre assumem objetos. Você sempre poderá fazer uma pergunta começando com “o que” ou “quem”.]
Examples:
I paid the bill last week. - What did you pay? [Eu paguei as contas semana passada – o que você pagou?]
She studies Russian. - What does she study? [Ela estuda Russo – O que ela estuda?]
Intransitive Verbs
Intransitive verbs do not take direct objects. [Verbos intransitivos não assumem verbos]
Examples:
Peter's situation improved. [A situação de Pedro melhorou]
They slept peacefully. [Eles dormiram em paz]
You can recognize that a verb is intransitive because it does not have a passive form. [Você pode reconhecer que um verbo é intransitiva porque porque ele não tem uma forma passiva]
Examples:
Peter arrived early. NOT Early was arrived Peter. [Pedro chegou cedo. NÃO cedo chegou Pedro.]
Transitive AND Intransitive
Some verbs with multiple meanings are transitive or intransitive depending on their usage. The verb 'run' is a good example. When used in the sense of physical exercise, 'run' is intransitive. [Alguns verbos com significados múltiplos são transitivos e intransitivos dependendo de seu uso. O verbo “run” é um bom exemplo. Quando usado no sentido de exercício físico, “correr” é intransitivo.]
Helen ran every weekend when she was at college. [Helen corria todo fim de semana quando ele estava na faculdade]
BUT
'Run' used in the sense of managing a company is transitive. [“Correr” usado no sentido de trabalhar em um negócio é transitivo.]
Jennifer runs TMX Inc. [Jennifer dirige a TMX Inc.]
